Samuil R. Umansky, M.D., Ph.D.
Chief Scientific Officer
Dr. Umansky is Chief Scientific Officer and one of three founders of Xenomics. Dr. Umansky graduated from Kiev Medical School (USSR) in 1964. In 1968 he received a Ph.D. and in 1975 a Dr.Sci. in radiobiology from the Institute of Biological Physics, USSR Academy of Sciences (IBP). From 1968 to 1993, Dr. Umansky was a professor at IBP. He was among the first scientists to begin studies of apoptosis, or programmed cell death. He performed pioneering studies on DNA degradation in dying cells and proposed a hypothesis on the existence of a genetic cell death program, and its evolutionary origin and role in carcinogenesis, concepts that more recently have become widely accepted. In 1987, for achievements on the investigation of radiation-induced cell death, Dr. Umansky was awarded the State Prize, the highest scientific honor awarded in the Soviet Union. From August 1993 to August 1999, Dr. Umansky was the Chief Scientific Officer of LXR Biotechnology, Inc. He discovered a significant role of apoptosis in acute myocardial infarction and anti-apoptotic effects of LPA and its synthetic analogs in this system. With his colleagues, Dr. Umansky discovered SARPs/sFRPs, a new family of genes that regulate apoptosis through the Wnt-signalling pathway, and their role in various pathological processes. Dr. Umansky has published more than 160 papers, and is an inventor on patents covering transrenal nucleic acids and related technologies.
David Robbins, Ph.D.
Vice President of Product Development
Dr. Robbins has worked in the biotech startup world since 2000 and in molecular diagnostics since 1997. Prior to joining Xenomics in 2006, he served as founding Vice President of Research at ChromoLogic in Pasadena and Vice President of Diagnostics for Remote Clinical Solutions in San Francisco. As founding Director of Microarray Applications for ViaLogy, he evaluated the application of Quantum Resonance Interference to microarray and DNA sequencing raw data from 2000 to 2003. Prior to the startup world, Dr. Robbins developed molecular assays for SmithKline Clinical Labs and was founding Manager of Assay Development for SmithKline's Molecular Diagnostics Venture. Dr. Robbins developed a series of automated immunoassays for hepatitis (HAV, HBV, HCV) at Abbott Labs. He holds a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Texas at Austin and a B.A. from the Johns Hopkins University.
Hovsep Melkonyan, Ph.D.
Vice President of Research and Development
Dr. Melkonyan heads Research and Development and is one of three founders of Xenomics. Dr. Melkonyan received his Masters in Biophysics in 1974 from Yerevan State University (Armenia). He completed his Ph.D. program in molecular biology in 1985 at the Institute of Biological Physics, USSR Academy of Sciences. His scientific interests were focused on the molecular genetics of programmed cell death (apoptosis) and its role in pathological processes. In 1993 Dr. Melkonyan was invited to join the team of scientists at LXR Biotechnology, Inc., and engaged in the development of drugs modifying cellular apoptosis. With his colleagues, he was the first to identify a family of apoptosis related genes (SARPs). He is one of inventors of the Transrenal DNA technology and coauthor of 18 issued and pending patents. As a VP at Xenomics, Inc., Dr. Melkonyan oversees activities related the design and development of prototype Tr-DNA based tests.
